On Saturday, members of the "Other Russia" political coalition tried to march peacefully against dicatorship in Moscow. A massive force of 10,000 soldiers was flung against them in an act of prior restraint before they could even begin marching; their leaders (including Garry Kasparov) and nearly two hundred members were tossed in prison. Then there were mass beatings and they were forced from the center of the city to an obscure rallying place. The march succeeded in generating massive international publicity; by the end of the day, Google news listed more than 750 press accounts. A second march was planned for Sunday in St. Petersburg.
