Big Victory For Sarkozy In France!

It finally hits him - he's won! Nicolas Sarkozy wins France's election

Rightwing Nicolas Sarkozy, is sailing toward a landslide presidential victory in France. The polls have closed in Paris and foreign exit polls signal that Sarko is taking a 10 point margin of victory over his socialist opponent, Segolene Royal. It's the first victory of a genuine rightwinger in memory. Oh Sarko has roots in the nationalistic command-economy style of the Gaullists, but France has never seen anyone with such radical views about national identity, competitiveness, law and order, and a sustainable economy as Sarkozy. His victory represents a real move toward change.

Not only that, he believes in democratic revolution! Look! From his victory speech, we can see it for ourselves:

Tolerance and tyranny

I want to issue a call to everyone in the world who believes in the values of tolerance, freedom, democracy, humanism, to all those who are persecuted by tyranny, by dictatorships. I want to tell all of the children throughout the world, all of the ill-treated women throughout the world - I want to tell them that it will be France's pride and its duty to be at their side.

France will be at the side of the Libyan nurses [Bulgarian nurses imprisoned in Libya], imprisoned for eight years. France will not abandon Ingrid Betancourt [held by Farc rebels in Colombia]. France will not abandon the women condemned to wear the burqa. France will not abandon the women who do not have freedom. France will be on the side of the oppressed of the world. This is France's message, it is France's identity, it is France's history.

I want to blow kisses at him, especially because he blasts the filthy FARC.

Whodathunk?

After all, isn't France the country that four years ago was branded 'cheese-eating surrender monkeys' for its opposition to the U.S. war in Iraq? Wasn't France solidly socialist to the bone? Weren't there a lot of analyses out saying that the French abhorred change, couldn't lift itself from its cafes, hated globalization and definitely didn't want a wild man like Sarkozy as president out wrecking the country? It's just amazing how mistaken so many observers were. There's a whole different country out there that none of them, neither enemy nor familiar, really seemed to know.

There's no doubt Sarko wants change. But he wants it for different reasons than leftists often do. Leftists want to create a New Man. Sarko wants to save France so that it can be France, not turn it into another cookie-cutter Berkeley or Ann Arbor, as has been happening. Sarko's a flag-waver. He's extremely passionate and energetic, and he will make a difference. His proposed economic programs to keep France powerful and competitive, will do just that, as French voters read it, because that's a big issue that resonated.

Sarko's victory is fascinating because even though he is rightwing and Sego is leftwing, that's not as important as the fact that he ran as the revolutionary, while Sego ran as the conservator. In Latin America, the dynamic might have been the other way around with the rightwinger being the conservator and the leftwinger seeking revolution.

But not so France, which has been socialist for decades, at least since the end of World War II. The election of a flaming rightwinger who doesn't even apologize for being 'a man of the right' is rather dramatic news that will knock the left's complacency about its special role in bringing revolutionary change off its axis. In fact, they were the Marie-Antoinettes without even realizing it.

Not only has France been socialist, it has been stagnant. That it's true is one thing, but that's less important than whether the French believed this. They did. The French are not clueless. They saw unchecked crime, unassimilated immigration, unjobbed youth and the unlovely social results of it all as a problem in itself and decided to fix it instead of crawl under a rock and pretend things would be ok. So, Sarko won.

How do I know this? Well, Sarko kept getting explosive pops in the polls in the last days of the election, and for signficant reasons related to this.

1. The first blow was when French thugs rioted in Gare Du Nord station and said they were smashing shop windows and burning tires because they didn't like Sarkozy (and didn't like paying subway fares either). Like Evo Morales of Bolivia, these thugs hoped to intimidate French voters into voting for someone else by promising violence. Sarko blasted them, said he'd come get them good if he were president. When he was criticized for his tough stance, he refused to back down and won a huge and definitive lead in the polls.

2. Sarko made a dazzling speech at a final campaign rally in France last Sunday, blaming the spirit of 1968 for France's current malaise. In other words he told the French 'Hippies Stink.' His words resonated with the French who must have sensed something gone off the rails over the yeras. Also his words were intriguingly intellectual because he seemed to want to trace the root cause of France's problems straight to its origins. He cited a bunch of philosphers, too, only in France can a politician get away with that, but it impressed the hell out of me. In that speech, Sarko articulated the unspoken thoughts of millions of Frenchmen who'd been smothered with a culture of political correctness for decades and who were told they were racists if they thought anything differently. Net result, another boost for Sarko in the polls.

3. The debate on May 2, really clinched it. Sarko calmly laid out his economic and political plans while his opponent, Segolene Royal, flew off the handle and postured and puffed about starving babies, trying to get an emotional vote. Sarko quietly told her to calm down and act presidential, showing that wonderful Gallic value for logic and sang-froid, one of those reasons the rest of us just love the French. Sarko's lead extended.

4. Finally, there was the Bin Laden Effect. Banlieue thugs (who are neither Muslim nor Islamofascist nor leftist, just pure thugs who deal drugs and act like South Central Los Angeles lowlife) vowed to riot and burn cars if Frnech voters dared elect Sarkozy. It was an echo of Osama Bin Laden's threat to destroy U.S. Red States if their voters dared vote for Bush. In both cases, it backfired. The more they showed their faces, the more French voters wanted the firm hand of Sarko to make things right.

Now, it looks like his lead is approaching ten points above that of Segolene.

What does this say? It says the French want revolution again - against thugs, against political correctness and against stagnant social policy. They want the Louie the Sixteenths out again. Upstart Sarko is a little short guy like Napoleon and vows to restore order. He's so French.

Vive La France!

BLOG AND MEDIA ROUNDUP

Nidra Poller at Pajamas Mediais liveblogging from Paris and has fantastic coverage of what's going on over there - she tells us what she's seeing, the things she smells in the streets, the weird stickers on walls, the illegal posters, the stuff she hears on the radio - cripes, you feel you are there. Her work is a must-read here.

Pajamas Media also has a wonderful straight roundup that's easy to scroll through and read here.

Fausta at Fausta's Blog has some awesome minute-by-minute coverage of all the happenings, and lots of video clips, it's a must-see here.

Daniel at Venezuela News & Views, who is French, has a kickass bunch of posts and a longer analysis of what's going on and why it matters, I really liked it, just click and scroll here.

Political Scientist Matthew Shugart at Fruits and Votes has some observations about distorted media coverage and explains how a government forms in France, with some dates to watch for. He cheers for Sego. Read it here.

Jim at GatewayPundit's got a hilarious photo-filled roundup, naturally, with a strong focus on the babe component, as you might imagine. See it here!

Meanwhile, the FuckFrance site (sorry about the name!) has all the racaille car-burning updates, as you might imagine, here.

Watch the elections results, live, come in Department by Department (that's like counties for us) in this terrific AFP map here. Looks like the departments around Alsace, Languedoc, Corsica, Tahiti, French Guiana, and Normandy are going Sarko. The Caribbean departments, the Rhone river valley, Gascony and Brittany seem to be more solidly Sego.

Bloomberg reports Sarko is victorious and Sego has conceded defeat in a new update.

Yahoo! France says the score is Sarkozy 53.3%, Segolene 46.7% thus far, not sure if it is the final one.

BBC has a video of Sarko's victory speech and written excerpts to the side, here.

The Sarko babes celebrate in the streets - unfortunately, I can't hotlink them on this Le Figaro gallerie, so click here.

Bush has congratulated Sarko, and Sarko has extended his friendship to the U.S. - His first message? Global Warming, he tells us to get on with it. Ralf. I guess that's what we can expect. I hope it wasn't all he had to say to us. Item here.

Buy French champagne! French winemakers, from the already-competitive powerhouse provinces of Champagne, Bordeaux and Burgundy, were bigtime supporters of Sarko and his freemarket message. No doubt they are celebrating themselves. Buy French wine!

Great bit of analysis and photo work. Blogged it in a nanosecond of seeing it.

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

Why thank you, V!!!

DP says:

I don't think those last minute pops in the polls really meant much. I've been watching the opinion polls for months and all that changed is Sarko went from 53% to 54.5% in the last days. He's been down to as low as 51% but always returned when Sego made a gaffe. What killed Royal in this election was her two months of constant blundering (you know, the Canada, nuclear submarine, and Hezbollah incidents). Before January she was always ahead of Sarkozy. But then she kept on opening her mouth and saying the stupidest things.

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

She didn't make any notable gaffes in the last days - I would disagree with you that the whole election was about her amassed gaffes though I am sure they made people conclude she was dumb. But it's notable that in the last days, Sarko did things people really liked and the polls showed pops, a few points here, a few there. One good analysis in Le Figaro said that most Sarko voters wanted Sarko because he was Sarko, and he was a first choice. Sego, by contrast, was drawing people who saw her as a stopgap against Sarko. Sarko's support was positive and Sego's was by default. Clearly Sarko had a stronger base from which to woo the center - and he apparently won over enough of them to win.

DP says:

Actually she made one notable gaffe: correcting Sarkozy during the debate that France had 17% of its power from nuclear power vice half. The correct number is actually 80%. It made me laugh. They both screwed up the number just like they did for the nuclear submarines.

I would have to agree with most of the rest of your analysis in that comment. People voted for Sego because they feared the changes of Sarkozy, not because they liked Sego. And they voted for Sarkozy because they liked the changes he would bring. Sort of reminds me of Kerry vs. Bush or Gore vs. Bush. Not a particularly brilliant strategy for the socialists.

But the reason they were not particularly impressed with Sego was her perceived incompetence due to her massive number of gaffes. If she played this election as cleanly as Sarkozy I think she would be the new President of France. Thankfully, leftists have a tendency to not do that.

La Russophobe says:

Gosh, seems like being pro-American isn't actually all that unpopular in Europe after all. What a shock!

This is another major setback for Russia. First Germany turns away, now France, and Russia has already totally alienated Britain while horrifying Europe as a whole, especially the East, with its outrageous policy on Estonia. Once again, Russia has backed itself into a corner, bet on the wrong horse and finds itself penniless and all alone.

Go Frenchies! Yeah baby, yeah!

RTLM says:

This is great news.
I hope the US and France can now cooperate economically and politically against Iran and avoid another bombing campaign.

mike says:

"His first message? Global Warming, he tells us to get on with it."

I doubt the global warming trend (seriously people, if the climate changes either way check the sun first instead of the economy), but if I were elected in France the first thing I would do would be to let Washington know that I am ready to work with them on my terms.

If I were elected President of the U.S. the first thing I would do is call Washington and let them know I was willing to work with them on my terms.

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

I agree, Mike. Global warming is for the birds. It's classic junk science, one of those weird pop hysterias that creeps up into the public consciousness in response to some weird western guilt thing going on over something else. It's like a pacifier that keeps people from confronting real issues directly. In this case, global warming is some people's way of assuaging their guilt because of the high price of oil and the failure of the US to open its coast to drilling as scary oil dictators arise. Once oil prices go down, the hysteria will evaporate.

Complete Fool says:

Global warming is not really happening. Every credible scientist in the world is just guilty because of high oil prices. It's just some weird pop hysteria propagated by alarmists who feel guilt over some other issue. Like guilt for high oil prices, which people have control over, along with tearing up the "coast" in search of more oil. Once these oil prices drop when the people snap their fingers, then the issue of global warming will magically disappear too.
Man, that crack pipe must be super glued to your hand!! : )

Attention:
Sarkozy is about as conservative as john kerry. In France the center right is somewhere between dennis kucinich and ralph nader. The people of France didn't vote for sarkozy because he's "pro-american". In fact the issue of the United States never came up in the one and only debate. Nor did Iraq. Only ego-centrist americans would assume that nonsense. Sarkozy was the minister of the interior under the last french government - which opposed Iraq and every other foreign policy conjured up by those half wits in the white house. American and French realtions will not be healed until dubya is A. either on trial for war crimes and crimes against humanity. or B. out of the white house, where someone sane can occupy it.
The youth of France liked Sarkozy (some of the youth) because they are the highest unemployed demographic in the country. It's difficult to fire someone in France and so people hold onto jobs much longer, leaving the youth at higher unemployment levels. Sarkozy promised to provide more jobs, and offer tax-free overtime (beyond 35 hours/wk). His economic policies appealed to more voters than Royal, who was more inspired by social policies. Money allows trumps people's well being...in any society.

I'm paraphrasing what I've read extensively about both candidates. The information is out there if you wish to educate yourself...rather than portray sarkozy's victory as a victory for conservatives or "the right", because once again the truth is "the right" in france is the left in the United States. But be impressed by your own delusions if that suits you.

La Russophobe says:

If anyone wants to see an example of an American half-wit, they need only examine your comment for proof positive! You've even got the classic arrogance seeping out of your pores, clearly inevidence with your crude, haughty "crack pipe" remark.

Nobody said he was pro BUSH. Bush is not the same as America, and we've never said so. In fact, we've critized Bush ourselves plenty of times. I guess you haven't heard that Bush will leave office soon and a presidential election cycle is underway, so you're wrong even if you're right. The point is that he didn't get elected by openly attacking America and his policies will be far more America-friendly than his predecessor. Your claims that he's not really conservative are just plain silly, ignorant and perhaps merely wishful thinking. The French had a clear choice and they made it, opting for the more pro-American, right-wing line, and you can't handle it.

Maybe you're speaking about crack pipes from personal experience?

La Russophobe says:

If anyone doubts that he is a serious right winger, check out what the New York Times says about him as the lead story on the front page of its website today:

"Nicolas Sarkozy, who defeated Ségolène Royal for the French presidency, is one of the most polarizing figures to move into Élysée Palace in the postwar era."

Headline: "Sarkozy Wins the Chance to Prove His Critics Wrong"

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/07/world/europe/07winner.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

They're running scared! Nuff said!

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

Listen up Complete Fool - you didn't read Chris Caldwell's Weekly Standard piece about the guy - it is linked above and I highly recommend it. No, Sarko is no John Kerry. He is a self-described man of the right and speaks of hard work and self reliance, something no selfrespecting leftist would ever do. He doesn't believe individual failures are 'all society's fault.' He pins the blame on individuals and doesn't shrink from calling them 'thugs.' Read Caldwell, and read Sarko's own words - the guy is rightwing. To say that French right is identical to John Kerry left is to engage in lazy conventional wisdom thinking, that canard has been around for awhile. And as Russophobe says, real rightwing isn't the same as pro-George Bush. I, for instance, am totally rightwing myself, but I am against Bush's cronyism, as in the world bank case and some others. I want no Bush carryovers in the next administration. But I am still rightwing.

Tof says:

LOL.
not very constructive for a first reaction. But I applause the power of medias and your capacity of analysis.
I actually even have read all the article, too much mistakes.
The two biggest:
* france only had 1 president of left during all its history (12 years, what decades!!! :()
*france is anti-US. Erm .... for sure .... That why I m studying here, listening US music, seeing US movies...) The only thing that France doesn't accept, is Bush government. Ask French what they was thinking about US during Clinton presidency, and you'll see the difference.

About Iraq, both candidates were against, and most of French are still against.
About riots last year in suburbs. Again, LOL. People in suburbs are not what you think. Drugs dealing: you should know that consumers are rich people. Have you never seen cocain in Bentley (open your eyes if not). Why riots? Islamism .... Sarko: called the suburbs people scum people with whom nothing is possible. For sure, if you stock people in buildings, discouraging them to work, decreasing the number of police, etc...

To finish about sarkozy building something new: He is in different French government for 30years. Do you really think about a break with previous policies?
Why he was elected: He achieved to get the hard-right votes due to his immigration policy. And yes, he has hungarian roots. For sure, cause his family left hungary after the war, due to problem of collaboration with the Reich.

Thanks for your post, you maid me laugh :)

PS: Yes, I m french. Yes I'm for the rightside party.
PS2: Our last problems with islamism in France, 1995.

Stefania says:

Guys, please don't forget that Sarkozy may be right-wing, but he is a French. And, above all, he is European. Living among Europeans, I know well that the European "Right" is not the authentic Right a la Reagan. Remember that Berlusconi also promised to do a Tatcherite Revolution, but he was stopped by the other parties of his coalition, which are "right-wing" socialists. Many Europeans'mentality is simply anti-free market and it's impossible for every goodwill leader to act like an American president.

I wish I am proven wrong, but knowing the Europeans, I can say I don't expect much from him. Because his major obstacle will be the French public opinion, which is STILL ANTI-AMERICAN and ANTI-SEMITE.

And the non-Anglo Saxon world usually tends to resist reform and its leaders don't have the guts to face the challenges.

Stefania says:

Againk, after reading his speech above, I hope he will keep the promises. If he will, then I can say there is hope for Europe.

Stefania says:

Again, after reading his speech above, I hope he will keep the promises. If he will, then I can say there is hope for Europe.

Stefania says:

Guys, Sarko's main priority does not seem to be fighting terror, that's why I have been advising to be cautious before cheering too much, rememberig that we are dealing with a non-anglo saxon country and that means a lot (being an Italian and having the French as "cousins", I know their mentality):

Robert Mayer says:

Amazing post Mora!!

What one will also have to keep in mind is the nature of France's political system. It is semi-presidential. His power in government is not the equivalent of Bush's, for example. If the right loses the parliamentary elections next month then we might as well write this whole thing off. Even if he does win, he will be contending with a party that is made up of lifelong government civil servants who have no truly vested interest in reform. The weakness of France's system is in the strength with which it was built in the heat of the Cold War.

Eric says:

Hi,

my name is Eric and I'm French.
Although I'm a convinced socialist, I think that the only relevant post here was Tof's ; no wonder, he's French!..Not on my side of the track, but French, and honest..
The rest of the posts is just people-who-know-nothing-about-us-fantasies...

I just wanted to put my two cents here to say that most socialists have NOTHING against entrepreneurial spirit, goodwill, work, free markets, making it easier for starters to make it good, etc...On the contrary! It's generally the wealthy part of France (aka the right)that blocks as much as it can the raise of new, more competitive people and businesses ; and that, at all levels of Society ; in France, when you've finally got your share of the cake, be it cause you're born with the silver spoon or you really made the effort (but it needs BOTH generally), then you fight teeth and claws to PRESERVE it ; when a guy's got a well-placed café in a trendy town, he'd bomb, he'd kill, rather than letting a competitor in sight (and don't ask HOW he managed to put up his business! crownies, pork-barrel politics, etc...); Only a small example of course...
The left, the obstacle to competitiveness in France?Ha!

Something else : yes, generally leftists are against HARD work ; they praise work, and individual acomplishment, but they genuinely believe that a modern Society must integrate a more balanced way of life (hence the term "quality of life")...35 hours a week is already a lot of work when done well, not goofing around...the guys who got goose bumps with Sarkozy's slogan "the early waking France" are generally fat bastards who can decide when to wake up!the truth is that the early-waking France sulks and would very likely exchange places with the aforementioned bastards...

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

Eric: Can you explain why Sego demanded to tax oil company profits, and would you care to comment on the effect of that approach, in, for example, Venezuela, on the production of the country?

I think you are pulling our legs when you insist that socialists have nothing against free markets or entrepreneurship. Tax something, get less of it. Cut taxes, get more of it. Human nature, something French nonsocialists excel at historically.

A.M. Mora y Leon says:

By the way, if you know so much about the French, how come your side lost, Eric?

DP says:

Yeah, those kulaks ruin everything don't they?

I love how a socialist will claim that he or she is for all the things that a conservative or neo-liberal government might bring, except when it applies to the rich as well. Heck, a socialist will basically say any philosophy of the right or left is fine, you just have to get rid of the kulaks. And if you oppose such an idea, well obviously you are just a heartless stealing kulak as well.

Why Left side lost? Because the candidate was a woman not convincing? Because Sarkozy gather the right and the hard-right side.
For sure if you only read Le Figaro or National Hebdo, you'll love Sarkozy.

Concerning free entrepreneurship, it is one of the first article of our constitution, and I can bet that no one (from hard left to hard right) is against it.

And i saw that we were Anti-Semite? where have you seen it? We do not need quotas to employ minorities, we didn't wait until 60's to give civil rights to them :(
Anti-American: you still don't understand that we are only anti-bush. Not anti-liberals, anti-republicans or other party. Only anti-bush. And you can ask any european: most of them won't understand how such a man can be elected president of USA (and i don't speak about his board).

Victor says:

I dont agree with you stephania, when you say that france is antisemite, and I m really shocked by such prejudice. Search for a country in the world history exept Israel that had a jew head of state: France, two times in the XXth century
(Leon Blum and Mendes France, and after world war II). I dont think that american could accept the same thing. But you re right, that's just an example. Here is another. France has the second largest jewish diaspora in the world (400 000)and Sarkozy, the new president, has jewish roots too. I dont say that there is no acts of antisemitism in France (and Its often perpetrated by young extremists who are manipulated). But how can you generalize? How can you use the world EUROPEANS or FRENCH like that? In order to assess a situation clearly, you have to get into the details. You re doing the same error as Bush in Irak "we will bring them our conception of democracy and they will instantly accept it"

These comments are an example of the haughty, nose in the air attitude about Americans exhibited by many Euro-socialist types that really gets under my skin. When you guys in the EU get 4.4% unemployment and records in both the stock exchange and intake of govt. revenues produced by the dreaded TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH!!! AARRRGHH!! Guess what? When you cut tax rates on the rich, they spend more money! Who would have imagined such a thing!

The makers of high end sports cars, luxury yachts, 5 star hotels and the like get more work, enabling them to buy more from their suppliers, which causes more jobs to be created, wich increases the number of employed people paying taxes, even at a reduced individual rate the govt. takes in more total revenues.

Want help for the poor? Cut tax rates drastically on EVERYONE and more job creation will follow. There is a bi-partisan success story in America of these principles. JFK, Reagan and now Bush have proved this beyond doubt. It is a socialist who wants to tax success in order to subsidize failure. Suck at your job and costing your company money? Don't worry about trying harder, we socialists will make it illeagal to fire you! Vote for us!

By the way, did any of you French know that Chirac and Saddam go way back together? Did you consider that all of Chirac's moral preening about Operation Iraqi Freedom was just a political strategy to preserve all of the undertable deals between Saddam's Iraq and Chirac's crony club? Schroeder in Germany had many of the same interests(interesting he went straight from office to Putin's hip pocket).

Want a lesson on how Mid East oil corrupts politics? Look no further than the mirror, my friends. Saddam's Iraq, Putin's Russia, Iran and of course the Sudan, none of which Europe is willing to sanction, because that's their golden goose.

Why are there no movements for "France out of Africa Now!!" I guess the world doesn't mind when the French military opens fire on an unarmed crowd of brown people and kills 60 or so of them. No big deal because it can't be made to be Bush's fault.

Jaques Chirac. How could such a man be elected President of France?

Hammer Storage, a division of Bell Microproducts, has released a new line of network storage devices based on Zetera’s Z-SAN SoIP (Storage-over-IP) technology. The storage devices are 4-bay configurations, which are available as either desktop (Z-Box Model HZD4B) or 1U rackmount (Z-Rack Model HZR1U) enclosures. Targeted at the small to medium-sized business storage market, the Z-Series line offers an economical approach to SAN storage. IP is the only storage fabric used, eliminating the requirement for host bus adapters, TCP offload engines, dedicated switches, and RAID controllers. wow goldworld of warcraft goldbuy wow goldcheap wow goldwow power levelingwow powerlevelingwow goldworld of warcraft goldbuy wow goldcheap wow goldwow power levelingwow powerlevelingwow goldworld of warcraft goldbuy wow goldcheap wow goldwow power levelingwow powerlevelingThe Z-SAN architecture affords solution providers an inexpensive, fast, scalable storage alternative.
