Is Russia Supplying Attack Aircraft to Syria?

Filed under: Europe ~ Middle East ~ Russia

A2005102625B_t208.jpgThe Jerusulem Post reports:

Russia has started delivery of top-of-the-line fighter jets to Syria under a new deal estimated to be worth US$1 billion, a newspaper said Tuesday -- but the report was quickly denied by the state arms trader. The business daily Kommersant said that Russia had begun delivering five MiG-31E jets under a deal apparently negotiated during Syrian President Bashar Assad's trip to Moscow last autumn. Commenting on the report, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mikhail Kamynin said in a statement that "all of Russia's deals in the sphere of military-technical cooperation comply with international law and Russia's obligations under various treaties and United Nations resolutions." He would not elaborate. But Sergei Chemezov, head of state arms-trading monopoly Rosoboronexport, flatly denied the Kommersant report. "Russia has no plans to deliver fighter jets to Syria and Iran," Chemezov said at a Paris air show, according to the Interfax news agency. Russia has shrugged off US and Israeli criticism of its previous weapons deals with Syria and Iran, saying the deals complied with international law.

The photo above, taken from the Kommersant story linked to in the quote, is captioned: "In Syria, even children love Russian military hardware, and they have ever since the Soviet MiG-17 (in the photo) took part in the 1973 war against Israel."

It would come as no shock that Russia would supply half a dozen MiG-31 Foxhounds to Syria - with any number of smaller MiG-29 Fulcrums - along with all the other missiles, rockets and bombs.

The MiG-31 is essentially a larger and heavier version of the MiG-25 Foxbat. The jet we were concerned enough about to develop the F-15 to counter it. After the defection of a North Korean Foxbat pilot to Japan, we studied the MiG-25 and found several areas of weakness - as a fighter. Maneuverability among them. However straight line speed was exceptional.

The MiG-31 was different. It was developed as a counter to the SR-71. It was to be launched in the path of a Blackbird in three ship formations. Armed with the most advanced Soviet missiles, it was to knock out the SR-71 and prevent the US reconnaissance missions at the height of the cold war. It is a very fast, high altitude jet. A perfect platform for stand-off missiles and/or recon. It would be a fine augment to the standing Syrian air force of some 400 fighters and 250 helicopters.

My opinion is that the Russians - providing engineering know how, in concert with the Iranians - providing funding, have been advising and maintaining the Syrian air force for some time. A jet like the Foxhound has the potential the tip the balance. Given its speed, altitude and weapons capabilities, a flight of five MiG-31's would be a priority target for Israel's air defenses. If the Syrians was to launch the bulk of their air force to Israel, it would take the attention off the necessary pinpoint strikes in Gaza, Lebanon and possibly West Bank and dedicate all assets to the protection of her soil from the North West and possibly East.

No wonder the Syrians have been acting so confidant. They believe they can win this time.

Maybe its time to send a Carrier Strike Group to the Eastern Med.

Could you please fix that?

Thanks :)

Russia is denying that they're selling the fighters to Syria or Iran. Curious. Very curious.

Bleepless says:

It is unlikely that Syria is getting the best. Traditionally, Moscow provides only stripped-down varieties to foreigners, jocularly known as "monkey models." This also may account for Russia'a denial: since they are sending different stuff, technically speaking their denial is accurate.

RTLM says:

Bleepless,
Good point - possible. But that was in Soviet times of unlimited budgets and unlimited quantities. Russia of today may well prefer to sell the advanced and expensive features they'd normally withhold.

Especially with a refurb version of a 30 year old fighter.

Stand off missiles notwithstanding.

cool_1 says:

That's OK. Syrian and Iranian fighter pilots need a place to sit while competent and highly trained pilots from Israel and the Coalition blast them out of the sky. They're much easier to kill in the sky than in their barracks.
