Putin Ssssssspeaks

"We will need to establish such systems which would be able to penetrate the missile defense systems [in Eastern Europe and allow us to attack them] . . . What kind of means will be used to hit the targets [defensive systems] that our military believe are potential threats -- ballistic missiles, or cruise missiles, or some kind of new weapons system?"

"Of course, I am a pure and absolute democrat. But you know what the problem is -- not a problem, a real tragedy -- that I am alone. There are no such pure democrats in the world. Since Mahatma Gandhi, there has been no one."

Vladimir Putin, so-called "president" of Russia, speaking to the Times of London over the weekend.

A few days ago America was Nazi Germany according to Putin and now, you guessed it, he's GANDHI! This man has come completely unglued. He's positively drunk with the illusion of power and unadulterated hatred of Western values fermented in a vat of resentment over the downfall of his beloved USSR. He's threatened to point his nuclear strikeforce at Europe after such actions destroyed the USSR, his only basis for his threat is the existence of defensive systems in Eastern Europe (why does he need the ability to fire missiles at Eastern Europe with impunity?), and meanwhile he thinks of himself as Gandhi (yes, it's a little known fact that Gandhi was famous for devising new offensive ICBM's to overcome defensive systems and thereby promote global thermonuclear holocaust).

The world must wake up to the true horror of what is happening behind the walls of the Kremlin, before it is too late. History is watching you, leaders of the Western world! It's judgment will be swift and harsh if you follow the course of appeasement that allowed the first Soviet state to arise!

Putin is scheduled to meet soon with George Bush at the family compound in Maine. All possible pressure must be brought to make our president realize the folly of his policies towards Russia, for his own good as well as the nation's.

After the death of Mahatma Gandhi, I have nobody to talk to.

Quoted by Putin to G&M (This will be the quote of the year along with Bush's AMD as joke of the year)

All these G8 (not all) missile lovers are meeting together, Osama should take note and himself fly on a suicide there and end all these war mongers from all sides at one instance.

blackminorca says:

Gandhi?

I did not know that Gandhi ran the Kremlin - that fine institution that was the agent of the Genocide of 100 million in the last century.

R says:

Last year, Foreign Affairs published an article claiming the US to be on the threshold of a First Strike capability against Russia - the capability to nuke Russia and its retaliatory capability. This caused alarm in Moscow.

One problem with trying this First Strike would be that it's difficult to get ALL the bombs and missiles and one could take out Washington or some other such place. The so-called Missile Defence must be seen in this context - as a plan to deal with the trickle of bombs that could hit the US after a sneak attack. The point of this shield is to allow the use of the sword, to make a nuclear sneak attack against Russia appear feasible and cause a madman in the White House to contemplate it as an answer to an oil dispute, the high price of platinum, or something like that.

Missle Defence against so-called Rogue States is a less ambitious version of the same plan. Conventional wisdom is that nuke-armed states are beyond the so-called "law" imposed by the US, cannot be subject to "police actions" and "regime change". Missile Defence is designed to make it possible to attack nuke-armed countries and of course makes a disaster in an American city far more likely as it could depend on this gadget supposedly working.

This is why Putin is reacting appropriately to the Missile Defence and Putin unlike Bush has a sophisticated sense of humour.

armchair pessimist says:

Now LaR, don't whup me for saying it, but Putin is their Reagan in that he is restoring his country's honor and clout in the world. To a point--and not an inch beyond--I wish him good success.

La Russophobe says:

ARMCHAIR:

By your logic, Hitler was Germany's Reagan.

I don't recall Reagan comparing himself to Gandhi nor even saying he was a "pure democrat" -- though he had a much better claim to either title than a lifelong KGB spy. Did I miss something?

Russia is losing 1 million from the population every year. Within two decades, 10% of the population will have AIDS. When was the last time you heard Putin mention it?

Putin is destroying Russia far more effectively than any foreign enemy might do. He's baiting the US into a second cold war with a country half the size of the one we've already destroyed in the first contest. How is that restoring honor and clout? Because of Putin, Russia stand utterly alone without allies, surrounded by NATO, the EU, and certain destruction.

What's more he can't be Russia's Reagan because Russia doesn't have a Tip O'Neil (and it doesn't have one because Putin would shoot such a person).

La Russophobe says:

R:

You have a quintessentially Russian ability to confuse total failure with success.

By your logic, the USSR reacted "appropriately" to Star Wars. It "appropriated" itself right into oblivion! Russia has a declining population and an average wage of $2.50 per hour. It can't afford to confront the West in this manner, and only a maniac would do so.

I guess Don Imus had a real "sophisticated" sense of humor too. And where is he now? Keeping company with the USSR.

Sorry, but advice like yours has led the Russian people to the brink of extinction. Do you really hate them that much?

armchair pessimist says:

LaR:

And if Hitler had known when to stop, before he had killed too many people, there'd be statues to him, and deservedly so.

That said, while Putin's heart is in the right place, he is not good for Russia for reasons I've stated many, many times.

And yet that said, this Reaganite Republican won't join the lynch gang against Russia. Not yet. But if any Russkies are reading this, I tell you this as a friend, don't go too far.

La Russophobe says:

ARMCHAIR:

What your saying is that you're prepared to gamble with Russian people's lives. How many of them will have to perish in order for you to be satisfied? Or will they all have to go, and some people closer to you too, before you will act?

Hitler didn't stop, and because we listened to analysis like yours we delayed taking action to stop him. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME!

Mark Krauss says:

nobody here seems to think the Europeans should have any say whatsoever about their security, curious.

Citpeks says:

Let me you all ask a question: when Mahatma Gandhi died?
I did not suspect that there are so many "not-very-bright" ;) people.. which just cannot get an irony...
Why not to qoute the dumb/provocative question, to which Putin's "Ghandi" was the answer and why not to quote Putin's full response (which was short)?

blackminorca says:

Putin as Ghandi, now as Reagan?
We are not suffering this foolishness gladly.

Reagan tore down the Wall - the Putin types put it up.

And those that were surrounded by the Iron Curtain will gladly help themselves to an extra helping of US Defense. The US tamed Nazi Germany, Imperial Japan, and Russia that killed 100 million in the last century is taking a bit longer.

WHAT? says:

Hey! This is what I'm talking about! Great articles (this & what GWB got wrong about Putin). Welcome back!

Citpeks says:

Inability to understand an irony is a sign of STUPIDITY! :))))

DER SPIEGEL: Mr President, former Federal Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder called you a 'pure democrat'. Do you consider yourself such?

VLADIMIR PUTIN: (laughs) Am I a 'pure democrat'? Of course I am, absolutely. But do you know what the problem is? Not even a problem but a real tragedy? The problem is that I'm all alone, the only one of my kind in the whole wide world. Just look at what's happening in North America, it's simply awful: torture, homeless people, Guantanamo, people detained without trial and investigation. Just look at what's happening in Europe: harsh treatment of demonstrators, rubber bullets and tear gas used first in one capital then in another, demonstrators killed on the streets. That's not even to mention the post-Soviet area. Only the guys in Ukraine still gave hope, but they've completely discredited themselves now and things are moving towards total tyranny there; complete violation of the Constitution and the law and so on. There is no one to talk to since Mahatma Gandhi died.

La Russophobe says:

CITPEKS:

Apparently, you are suggesting that Putin was joking when he made these remarks. If that is correct, it is a far worse situation than if he was serious. Putin knows full well that the whole world is arrayed against him on the question of democracy and that we stand in the brink of a new cold war that his nation is utterly unequipped to wage, much less win. If, instead of attempting to seriously address the world's concerns, he chooses instead to joke about them, in effect telling the world to go to hell, that's exactly the kind of behavior that the world castigates when it comes from George Bush (who, at least, presides over a nation with a growing population). That he would choose to do so through a translator in a foreign langauge, leaving open so much room for misunderstanding, his the indication of a rogue leader (like the one who joked about rape in front of an offical Israeli delgation) and someone who cannot be trusted to hold power.

But what basis do you have for concluding he was joking? Can you cite any evidence for this? Putin knows how his remarks were received; has he issued an official statement saying he was "just kidding"? You weren't there, so how dare you impugn the intelligence of the entire world? Are you that crazed an ego maniac? How dare you claim he was joking with no basis other than your own "analysis"? Who do you claim to be, a close confident of Mr. Putin who can read his thoughts? Give me a break!

I guess you think Krushchev was also just being "ironic" when he took off his shoe at the UN. That's the kind of irony which gets people killed -- but maybe you enjoy that result?

Citpeks says:

La Russophobe says:

"But what basis do you have for concluding he was joking?"

When Ghandi died? When Putin was born? :)))
Regrettably, your intellect is clearly under par... :))... adieu! ;)

La Russophobe says:

CITPIKS:

In other words, you have NO evidence. WHAT a surprise!

Here's some:

"I personally cannot be responsible for the president's words,"[Russia's Ambassador to Ukraine Viktor] Chernomyrdin said, "but it was not a joke; presidents do not joke in such cases."

http://www.regnum.ru/english/839535.html

Putin did not say he had conversations with Gandhi. He simply said that since Gandhi was not a live a real democrat such as himself had nobody to talk to.

Moreover, you totally ignore the disgusting impropriety of a president joking about this kind of topic. How would you like it if George Bush told jokes about how many Russians were killed by the Nazis and how many are lost from the population every year. Would you laugh and praise his sense of irony?

It is a WORSE attack on Putin to say he was joking than to say he was serious. The fact that you don't understand that only goes to prove what a perfect example of Russian failure you are.

Citpeks says:

La Russophobe says:
"you have NO evidence"
:))))
Can you be any more stupid?

"you totally ignore the disgusting impropriety of a president joking about this kind of topic."
What topic??? If Putin is a "pure democrat"? Ask Bush if he is 32%-pure democrat! :))) How about to try to ask really serious questions?
Putin answered the very same question from another german jornalist a few days ago... now, the stupid question the second time around... toooo much!!! ;)

La Russophobe says:

Ah, I see. So Putin was also joking about Russian opposition to the US missile defense plan for Europe. So we can go ahead and ignore what Putin said.

And he was joking when he said Chechen terrorists are bad. So we can go ahead and supply weapons to them.

And he was joking when he said he was a reliable energy partner. So we should prepare for Cold War II with Russia, and make sure Russia is totally destroyed this time.

Thanks for confirmation!

xandwhy says:

I'm with 'R' on this, the missile defence is a step to nuclear primacy and first strike capability, an extremely dangerous game.

"Our military experts certainly believe that this system affects the territory of the Russian Federation in front of the Ural mountains."

It also threatens Europe in two distinct ways. 1. By making Poland and Checkoslovakia primary targets for Topol M and RS 24 missiles designed to break the defense. 2. As a message to Brussels to twart any plans for military self determination.

The complete interview is an interesting read.

"The US tamed Nazi Germany"

Read up on the Bush family:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1312540,00.html
"This was the mechanism by which Hitler was funded to come to power, this was the mechanism by which the Third Reich's defence industry was re-armed, this was the mechanism by which Nazi profits were repatriated back to the American owners, this was the mechanism by which investigations into the financial laundering of the Third Reich were blunted"
