Neo-Soviet Russia, Found Guilty of Attacking Georgia, Stonewalls at the U.N. -- And, at last, the U.S. Fights Back!

Exposing an outrageously dishonest neo-Soviet Russian response to Georgian allegations, an official international delegation has visited Georgia and determined that Russia did in fact violate Georgian airspace with military attack aircraft and strike Georgian territory with a large missile:

"An unidentified aircraft flew from Russian airspace into Georgian airspace and back again into Russian airspace three times," the eight experts said in their report. "The first in Georgian airspace lasted less than a minute. The final two passes into Georgian airspace lasted significantly longer and the unidentified aircraft went deeper into Georgian airspace." The experts, ranging from independent military analysts to defense ministry employees, identified the missile as the Russian designed KH-58. "The Georgian air force does not possess aircraft equipped with or able to launch KH-58 missiles," their report said.

In response, the U.S. is aggressively pushing for a strong censure from the U.N. Security Council and, cowering like a venal criminal in the shadows, Russia is using its veto to block the Council from voting just as the USSR used to do. The U.S. response has been, impressively, quite firm:

"The United States deplores this attack," U.S. envoy Jackie Sanders told reporters after the council was briefed by senior U.N. peacekeeping official Hedi Annabi on the August 6 incident in which a missile hit a field without exploding. "We support the idea of a formal session of the Security Council, supporting Georgia's request for that. ... We will be pushing to have that as soon as possible. We thought it was really important that the Security Council make a statement on this issue." Russia was not prepared today to have a formal statement or press statement. This is an ongoing situation. We intend to pursue it. Sanders said the United States will continue to push for closure of the investigation. Any of us in the U.N., if we had a missile coming over our borders and planes from unknown places coming over our borders, we would surely hope that the Security Council, which has a responsibility for international peace and security, would address it," she said. She indicated that if Russia continues to block a council meeting, the U.S. will call for a vote to get the incident on the council's agenda.

Why does Russia fear the truth? Because it is guilty! Why does Russia fear democracy? Because it is a dictatorship! This act of aggression by Russia against Georgia must not go unanswered. If the world behaves in the same way towards Vladimir Putin's malignant dictatorship as it did towards that of Hitler, it will reap the same results. Today their Georgia, tomorrow ours!

It's crucial to understand that Georgia wants to join NATO but the alliance's constitution says a country cannot become a member if there are conflicts within its borders. In these events, Russia is systematically trying to fan the flames of those conflicts, so as to thereby keep Georgia out of NATO protection and simultaneously weaken it, making it a ripe target for invasion. NATO must put aside its prior rules and immediately extend membership to Georgia. If it doesn't, it will only make the day of reckoning that much worse, as we have seen so many times in the past.
