So Much for Chechnya being "Under Control"

Reuters reports that, in an apparent terror attack, a Russian train has been blown off its rails while en route between St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia's two major cities:

Russian Railways said in a statement it was the result of "unauthorized interference in the functioning of the train." One eyewitness said the derailment was preceded by two explosions. "There was a bang under the train. Unfortunately that is the only way we can describe it until investigators and the FSB (state security service) . . . reach their own conclusions," Sergei Mikhailov, an aide to Russian Railways chief Vladimir Yakunin, told Vesti-24 television station. The train derailed just after crossing a bridge over a road, said a Reuters photographer at the scene. A conductor on the train showed Reuters a video he recorded on his mobile telephone of a crater about 2 meters (6 ft) across that could be seen on the bridge, where the rails should have been. "We heard two explosions, then the train put on the brakes suddenly," one conductor, who did not want to be identified, told Reuters. "The train shook. A panic started," he said. "We smashed out the glass and helped the passengers out . . . The worst damage was in the restaurant car. That is where most of the casualties were." The derailed train was blocking two sets of tracks, causing delays to other rail traffic.

This is Moscow, far in the north. The IOC has placed the 2014 Olympics in Russia's most unstable region, the far southern area. Lunacy, pure and simple.

Arming terrorist supporting nations will not keep you safe Russia

La Russophobe says:

Well said indeed! Russia sends massive aid to both Hamas and Hezbollah, as well as providing lots of diplomatic cover, never thinking for a second about the victims of their terrorism. Now the chickens have come home to roost.

pana says:

Ahem, recent U.S. arms deals with Saudi Arabia and Egypt; and a French arms deal with Libya. Also the case of the 190,000 missing AK47s in Iraq.

La Russophobe says:

Ahem. Saudi Arabia is not Syria and Egypt is not Iran. Neither has been accused of state-sponsored terror, much less is either actually run by a clan of terrorists. Moreover, America isn't Russia. If you can't distinguish them, you need a refresher course in morality.

pana says:

Saudi Arabia provides billions to Hamas and Hezbollah; an authoritative monarchy more a threat to security in the world than perennially-weak Syria. And what will happen in 10-15 years when all of these young Saudi babies grow-up and the state doesn't have enough petrodollars to maintain peace and order within the country.

La Russophobe says:

Are you suggesting that American money is being funneled through Saudi Arabia to Hezbollah and/or Hamas? I haven't heard this allegation before. If you are making it, please document it.

Otherwise the fact that the Saudis support Hamas or Hezbollah is no basis for attacking th U.S. America must have relations with the Saudis because of their oil and does not directly support terrorist organizations or regimes, but rather opposes them as a leading voice in the world, and Russia does the opposite without any economic justification. Russia is fundamentally hostile to all Muslim nations and takes this action only to torment the West. If you think America is a bigger threat to Islam than America, you are deeply confused.

pana says:

These are commonly known facts Russophobe:
- Charities from Saudi Arabia and Qatar pay money to families of Palestinians killed in the fighting, including suicide bombers
- A lot of the suicide bombers in Iraq are Saudi or Saudi-backed
- 9/11 was a culmination of Saudi terror vs. the west

No denying this. Hopefully some of our leaders could get some cajunas and stand up to these religious fanatics, sabotaging a religion, and holding the western world hostage to their stinking oil.

"America must have relations with the Saudis because of their oil and does not directly support terrorist organizations or regimes" is such a wussy cop-out and a stab-in-the-back to the hundreds of thousands of victims of Saudi terror.

Saudi Arabia should be made an example of and being scared of their oil wealth, like you obviously are, is freaking weak.

La Russophobe says:

You seem to be quite confused and inattentive.

(a) This post is NOT about Saudi Arabia. If you'd like to write up a post about that topic, please do and submit by e-mail. Otherwise, please confine yourselves to the topic, which is RUSSIA. It's the typical ploy of a propagandist to defend one country's actions by saying that those of another country are worse. I take a dim view of such tactics. Can't you at least try to make a little effort to relate your comments to the post?

(b) I have NOT said that Saudi Arabia does not support those who support terrorism. I'm sure that, as is the case with every nation in the Middle East, some links can be drawn. PANA tried to argue that AMERICA was supporting Hamas and Hezbollah, and I said that's nonsense. NO evidence of American funds being directed to those groups has been put forth by you. Your link merely accuses the Saudis of 9/11 complicity, it doesn't say American government money went through them to Hamas or Hezbollah.

(c) Saudi Arabia has been a vital American ally in the middle east for decades. They may well be doing things that America would like to stop (we routinely criticize the Saudis on this blog), but Russia is NOT the same. It is NOT a long-time American ally. If you are suggesting that America should treat them both the same, I think that's utter hogwash. Russia provided active intelligence to Sadaam during the attack on Iraq, and it is arming Hugo Chavez to the teeth. Russia is unilaterally pulling out of major arms control treaties and launching a massive military buildup. The Saudis have done nothing like that. America can't afford to spurn the oil supplies of both countries, and for me the choice between them is a no-brainer.

armchair pessimist says:

Arming terrorist supporting nations will not keep you safe Russia

But what will keep you safe over the coming decades, Russia, is to stop behaving like a juvenile deliquent and to accept a very profitable live and let live partnership with the US. Your oil, our muscle.

Wise up, Tovarish Dunce. Your enemies--and ours--are getting stronger by the day.

ANd LaR I am praying for the day we can tell Saudi A to take their Koranic oil and shove it.
