America, the Indispensable Nation

21stox-600.jpg

Over the past four trading days, the Russian stock market has lost over 13% of its value (leaving brokers who sold the market to their clients as a safe haven based on Russia's oil resources looking like the crooks they are). The Indian Sensex Index took the second-biggest one-day loss in its history on Monday, and markets throughout Asia also suffered massive losses. Europe immediately felt the ripple effects.

The reason is simple: Us. Or rather, U.S.

America's stock market is dragging them down. See, the world depends on our purchasing power, and if that's taken away, the world's economy will collapse. The world depends on American buyers just the same way America depends on foreign oil suppliers, except to a far greater extent. America has made itself indispensable to the world. Checkmate. Game over. It's not clear, though, that the world has yet come to grips with this reality.

Without American purchases of crude oil, the price on world markets would collapse, and it would take the Russian economy with it. Russian investors know that, so they're selling their shares as fast as they can.

Without American purchases of Chinese and Indian crap, their nations would be buried under mountains of it. Chinese and Indian investors know that, so they're selling their shares as fast as they can.

Americans routinely ask what we might do to encourage foreigners to hate us less. But when was the last time you heard a foreigner ask how he might help the American economy do better, and thus help themselves as well? When was the last time you heard one speak up and say: "Hey, our future depends on these people you want to destroy. Shut up, already." Instead, it seems there is a whole host of benighted morons who delight in American difficulties, seemingly oblivious of the horrific impact on their own lives. Or else, they're simply overcome with bitterness and suicidal impulses.

John says:

This last paragraph of the article reminds me of the argument that Chomsky often uses that goes something like “That’s like saying a slave should appreciate the employment of his/her slave master solely because the slave depends on his/her slave master (instead of the slave asking himself/herself how can we slaves free ourselves from our slave masters and become equals).”

It’s never good for an economy (global or local) to be lopsided in its dependencies (such as the world depending on how frivolously we Americans spend our money). Perhaps it will require a “reboot” of the world economy to bring a greater balance (but then capitalism as we know it will begin to crumble because, in its current form, capitalism depends on this imbalance for its survival… keep the poorer nations subservient to the global powerhouse and all is well… for now… until that paradigm finally collapses… and not from any anger or hatred of the US [as the article erroneously suggests], but just from the sheer non-sustainability of such a paradigm).

La Russophobe says:

You have no basis whatsoever for believing that the world economy can, in fact, be "rebooted" without destroying it utterly. In childishly blind hatred of the U.S., you are prepared to gamble with the lives of the world's population.

You can't give any examples in answer to the challenge I posed, so you attempt propaganda. If you really believe America is enslaving the world, it's only because you yourself have never lived under slavery and don't understand what it really is.

Lame.

Americaneocon says:

Great post - America is indispensible!

horse poker says:

Well no, clearly the U.S needs to continue to fail as horrifically as it has been thats the only way to show China and Russia who's boss.

Ray says:

This Kim Zigfeld is clearly an immigrant. No real American would bother comparing America with Russia so much. A real American gets absolutely zero pleasure knowing that Russia's problems are worse than ours; real Americans look at America's very serious credit problems and think, "How do we fix this?" Not, "Yeah, well, Russia is worse off, nyah-nyah-nyah." Pathetic.

It's a shame my country allows immigrants like her in.

Freedum isnt free. The price of liburty is constant survaylance. Besides, what do you have to hide? If your not a terorest you will be fine, otherwise we get rid of you in some camp where you belong! As long as bush fights this war for vistury any and all sacrafises must be made to inshure securitty. Mcain in 08!

Gus says:

Great point, Kim. Immigrant or not, you are spot on.

Richard Chan says:

Dependence of the entire world on a single country is never good thing. While I agree this is a reality for today, I predict that in the future, as the E7 industrialize and as their economies mature, this sort of problem will be reduced in weight. Of course, the U.S. would still be a very important country in the world economy, but nowhere near today’s standards, when it absorbs more than 80% of the world’s savings.

hastingspete says:

Wow. Your argument is... interesting. We're indispensable because we buy India's and China's "crap" (your words, not mine) and consume so much oil that the price will drop when we go into recession. So that should command some sort of respect.

More accurately:
1) We consume more than we should, saving very little, and borrowing from the world to finance our consumption-frenzied lifestyle.
2) The Chinese fund us because they want this to continue since it is financing their economic transition.
3) Chinese and Indian industrial demand, on top of our very regular demand, is pumping up oil prices (along with some regular speculation), and the price will drop when the world goes into recession.
4) Our complete failure to begin to transition away from foreign-imported fossil fuels further damages our payment balance so countries like Dubai are able to buy up meaningful chunks of companies like Citibank.

And somehow this is all a good thing. This was all a bunch of linked houses of cards, and now that the mortgage card was pulled out, and our house is falling, we pull others with us. We should be SO proud of our accomplishments.

Do you even know when you're parodying yourself?

La Russophobe says:

hastingspete:

Wow your comment is . . . interesting. Also wildly dishonest and propagandistic. There's nothing in this post about "good thing." Only facts. Sorry if you can't handle them within the puny confines of your so-called brain. If you can't be honest, please refrain from commenting on this blog.

Jeff says:

To La Russophobe:

It's ...interesting that you feel the need to respond to two posts that honestly and factually address the issue at hand with childish name calling. Are you willing to enter into a serious discussion of the facts presented, or are you satisfied that you got your point across with the "you're a poopie head" argument?

As for the article, I think it is clear that this situation could have been (and has been by several people who were ignored or shouted down) predicted for years now as the US becomes a consumer and service economy with no substantial foundation. Also, the other countries to whom we exported our jobs, in their race to the bottom of wages and labor standards, are operating on a house of cards where there are many people working for next to nothing and they don't have enough money to support a healthy economy of their own.

Amphipolis says:

We consume more than others, because we produce more than others.

We consume more than others, because we work more than others.

We are wealthy because we have earned, because we trade, because we have a stable government approaching its 56th presidential election. We are strong because we are willing to sacrifice.

We don't force our culture down their throats. They tune in because we have something to offer that they want. If you don't like McDonald's or Disney or Madonna, don't patronize them or, better yet, come up with something better. That's what the Japanese do.

America will not always be in this position. Our predominance won't be permanent. It is already eroding. I just hope whoever ends up replacing us doesn't bring on a new dark age.
