Anti-American Doings over at the Daily Kos
Filed under: US Elections
My mind is open to persuasion, but right now I disagree with the large majority of Publius Pundit readers who think it would be better for John McCain to face Hillary Clinton in the fall for the presidency. I believe McCain can whip Hillary, but I'd rather see him face Obama. And my reason is really quite simple.
The lunatics at the Daily Kos like him.
To me, that says he can't be elected, not any more than Howard Dean (who once also seemed like a formidable grass-roots candidate) could be. It says he's an extremist, and I trust the American people to see that. His weird connections through his church to the maniac Louis Farrakhan is the simplest expression of this extremism, and his creepy personality cult perhaps an even better one. Echoes of Vladimir Putin. On top of that, he's an admitted drug user with a murky past (he called himself "Barry" in school and dabbled not only with reefer but with cocaine; a close friend from school has spent seven years in prison). Hillary, for all her faults, is a mainstream candidate, and women are a far more potent voting force than African Americans.
Obama is a man totally devoid of even the illusion of qualifying accomplishments or experience, who speaks in empty, vacuous platitudes that will ring false in light of America's serious problems. Compared to a man of deep experience and substance like McCain, a great patriot and war hero, he'll simply come up short.
Have a look at the fanaticism over at the Daily Kos, and then tell me you think a person they like can be elected dog catcher by a great nation.
(1) They're terrified of John McCain. So much so that, if you can believe it, they are attacking him because, they claim, he's not a conservative. They believe conservatism is bad for America, so they're taking steps to increase the chances it will take power by attacking Republicans for picking a candidate who, they say, isn't one. If that doesn't seem rational to you, it's not. Not that they're overly rational in any case, but right now they just can't bring themselves to think, you see, about how he'll crush any of their candidates with the independents and crossover Democrats he will draw. They're so desperate that they are resorting to outright lies, such as their claim that Laura Ingraham is attacking McCain, when in fact she's on record saying she'll vote for him.
(2) When the Republicans were fighting over a nominee, they said it proved they were losers since they couldn't settle on a candidate. Now that they've done so ahead of the Democrats, who are on the verge of waging all-out war all the way to the convention and exhausting their finances and reputations in the process (see #3), this doesn't concern them one bit.
(3) When Republicans flood a campaign with money, out-raising Democrats, it's a sign of their corruption. When Obama does it to Hillary, it's a sign of how much he's loved.
(4) They gleefully say that Hillary Clinton is running out of money and her staffers are going without their paychecks and that notwithstanding having won both New York and California and Massachusetts despite the Kennedy endorsement, Obama "clearly won" Super Tuesday. Apparently, they think this means Clinton's about to withdraw from the race. You may remember what happened the last time Kos tried his hand at predictions. Let's just say it wasn't pretty. And of course, you will recall what happened to their darling Golden Boy Howard Dean.
The next time you wonder why the Democratic party hasn't reelected an elected president with a majority of the popular vote since Franklin Roosevelt (while Republicans have done it over and over -- Eisenhower, Nixon, Reagan, Bush II), just reflect on the Daily Kos. All things will become clear.
