No Country for Old Morons

art.oscar.euros.afp.gi.jpg

Last night at the Academy Award ceremonies in Hollywood, America gave all four of its main acting awards to Europeans (a Spaniard, a Frenchwoman and two Britons -- that's the four joyous winners, pictured above). Name the last time Europe did America a favor like that.

Yet, Americans are supposedly hostile to European cultural virtues?

Oh yeah and, by the way, a billion people tuned in to watch the telecast. Name one other country in the history of the television that can has got the world as interested in what it's doing on the cultural front.

Meanwhile, it looks very much as though a black man -- and not just any black man, mind you, but one whose middle name is the same as our former arch enemy in Iraq and whose last name rhymes with the first name of our current arch enemy in Afghanistan -- will receive a nomination for president of the United States.

Yet, America is supposedly a racist nation. (Note: Sinking to yet another epic new low, the New York Times reported "hushed worry" that Barack Obama will be assassinated. There are no such threats, and to my knowledge no African-American candidate for any office in American history has been assassinated to keep him out of office. Yet the Times reported this story on the front page of its website, opposite a story about how conservatives having "lingering doubts" about John McCain. Shameful. Disgraceful. It's actually sordid. Eww. Yuck.)

We're supposedly in economic decline, yet we lead all major nations of the world in per capita GDP.

We're supposedly poorly educated, yet last year we won more Nobel Prizes than all other nations of the world put together.

Isn't it just about time the America bashers got over themselves?

PS: Speaking of Oscar, Russia was up for two awards last night, foreign- language film and animated short subject. It lost both, and as if to put the boot in Academy voters gave the animated award to a British film on a Russian subject, Peter and the Wolf, and the foreign-language award to an Austrian film about Hitler. Ouch.

T-Ray says:

Hollywood=Culture? It is good you pointed out that the award winning actors did not really earn the awards, but we "favored" with them. You also forgot to point out the winning documentary, "Taxi to the Dark Side" detailing the tortured murder of a simple taxi driver suspected of being a terrorist.

Ray says:

Kim,
To answer two questions:
1. The conservative Washington Times reported almost two months ago that the Secret Service was worried enough about possible threats to Obama to increase security. This same conservative newspaper also reported similar threats against Jesse Jackson and Colin Powell:
http://www.washingtontimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080107/NATION/415598644/1001

2. The love of your life Michelle Malkin talks about conservative doubts about McCain, whom she calls "John Edwards McCain":

Signed,
The "nitwit" who happens to be a native English speaker

really? says:

kim,

at first i found your articles funny, then i found them annoying, now i think they're evidence of serious mental instability.

you've ripped hollywood and the 'liberal elite' dozens of times on this blog and others. yet suddenly, we're supposed to celebrate it, and embrace it as the perfect expression of americas 'culture'? what gives? i thought hollywood was the domain of america-hating disgusting russia-coddling terrorist-defedning loosers?

did you even see any of the movies that were nominated for best picture? needless to say, you could fit all the pro-americanism of 'no country for old men' and 'there will be blood' in a thimble or, apparently, in your cranium

OlYaleCokeDealer says:

From Kim's Bio: "She speaks Russian and has lived in Russia; her analysis is based on personal experience at ground zero, she does not claim academic or professional credentials as an "expert."

You. Don't. Say.

tommo says:

You said, "Name the last time Europe did America a favor like that."

The awards are not "a favor", rather a recognition of superior talent. You moron.

How can right-wingers be wrong on EVERYTHING? Just as Baghdad Bush has done NOTHING, not one single thing of value for our nation as a whole, there is something clinically flawed about the brain of everyone who calls themselves a Republican. Kool-aid poisoning.

wmforr says:

So you are saying,... what?

Although most of Europe and the Middle East hates our foreign policy, although we have destabalized a huge part of the world and caused the deaths of hundreds of millions while bullying and threatening anyone who disagrees with us...

Because lots of people watched the Oscars, we da best, we da best.

Guess what? Lots of people around the world listen to American pop music too. That doesn't mean they worship at the shrine of the American Empire or that they light candles beneath pictures of Bush and Cheney.

La Russophobe says:

TOMMO:

They're SUBJECTIVE you brainless dolt. All of the nominees were highly meritorious, and America could easily have rejected all the Europeans out of blind nationalism, but it didn't.

It's really sad that you hate America so much that you can't even give her a little bit of credit for doing something impressive. I pity you.

La Russophobe says:

RAY:

I didn't ask any questions, you clueless fool, and you certainly didn't answer any.

It's pretty bizarre that the only source you can find for threats against Obama is Reverend Moon's paper. I guess the rest of the media is just ignoring it, huh? Obama himself has said there is nothing to worry about, yet the Times reported it on the front page as if it was big news. There are threats to ALL presidential candidates, and there is NO evidence that Obama has been specially targeted.

My point about McCain is not that there is nothing for conservatives to criticize, although because of the Times own smear tactics they are now closing ranks around him, but that the Times chose to attack him while lauding Obama in opposing front-page items. Please find an instance where it did the reverse, if you can.

If you can't comment based on what I've actually written and in good faith, then don't comment at all. You'll only prove how illiterate and stupid you are.

La Russophobe says:

REALLY:

Whenever people like you have no other response, they always want to lock up their adversaries in mental institutions or kill them. We've documented neo-Soviet Russia using this tactic against Kremlin critics on numerous occasions. So, in my view, you're the one whose quite mentally diseased. But then, who am I other than the author of this blog. You, on the other hand, are mighty commenter.

YALECOKEDEALER:

Careful dear, your jealousy is showing. Not enough people reading your blog, sweetie? Or don't even have one at all, coz you lack the initiative? That's too bad. Maybe you should try putting up pictures of naked girls and doing drugs a little less, that might help.

Ray says:

You're right, I might "prove" myself (pardon the malapropism) to be so illiterate that I might be the type who wouldn't know that the word "nitwit" is archaic speech, or that the phrase "crazed ideological pathology" sounds like immigrant English ground up through an on-line Thesaurus... God forbid I should ever write almost-good immigrant English like you do "Kim"! Brrrr!!!

Rand says:

So, the Oscars show reality? I guess Hollywood really is right about politics.

Aris Katsaris says:

On my part I'm trying to remember how many posts ago was anything relating to democratic revolutions, rather than a discussion of how much America rocks or how much Europe and liberals suck.

Arun says:

Several billion? Seriously? That suggests that more than 4 billion people watched the program. Given, that there are 6.5 billion people on the planet, and a large number of them live without access to television, you're suggesting that every person on the planet with access to a television watched the oscars. Including those who were at work because it was daytime where they are, those who were asleep because it was night where they were, and those who didn't care.

Check your facts next time, at least then you arguments won't sound as silly.

La Russophobe says:

ARIS:

Try reading the lead post on the blog about Oleg Kozlovsky, you blockhead. Then try to use your awesome brain to suggest constructive ways that we might help protect this young democracy protester.

If you can, that is. I'm betting you can't.

this is great says:

Kim,

Get a life, stop angrily defending your idiotic post.

What's next, a weather forecast comparison showing why California (and thus America) is superior to Moscow this time of year?

What about a searing indictment of Europe based on its performance in the Davis cup? A criticism of Russia because of the performance of a few of its women's tennis players?
(oh wait, you already did the last one, you nutjob!)

Seriously Kim, get help. The world is a pretty nice place most of the time.

Robert in BA says:

"Name the last time Europe did America a favor like that."

They spent their hard earned money supporting these same movies.

Next question!
(Please make them harder).

hicountryho says:

so, " America could easily have rejected all the Europeans out of blind nationalism, but it didn't."

wow, that is uh, impressive.

La Russophobe says:

ARUN:

You're a mental case, sir. Your point has no merit unless you are suggesting that the Oscars are not among the most-watched television programs on the planet. That's the only substantive point being made in the post, and if you are reduced to such an absurd level of anal detail ("only" 900 million watched it! "only" 1.4 billion! aha!) it's a pretty strong indication that the actual point of the post is pretty strong. Guess it got under your skin pretty effectively if you felt motivated to write such a childish comment, and I thank you for that confirmation, because that's what it was designed to do.

La Russophobe says:

hicountryho: If you are impressed then please tell your friends and neighbors, since many America haters think America is a provincial country that would do just that.

La Russophobe says:

RAY:

The next time you SPAM my blog will be the last time a comment of yours appears on it. Confine yourself to the topic of the post or restrain yourself. Otherwise, you're a terrorist.

FOLLOWUP:

Congratulations, you crude terrorist thug, now you are banned from commenting on this blog. Do it again and I will delete all your past comments based on your IP.

MattM says:

Um...you DO know that all the Academy voters AREN'T just Americans, right?

a young curmudgeon says:

I think this whole thing would be easier if we talked about the two America's out there. The Europe loving, socialist, multiculturalist majoritarian democracy-loving anti-military guilty-feeling white kids and their 3rd world allies, and on the other side the individualist, pro-constitution patriotic (and often religious) Americans and their allies(often violently pro-individualist immigrants like me and Kim, who even go so far as using something we dislike to prove America ain't that bad, even the socialist side. Maybe we shouldn't do that for consistency)
