That infamous censored media

Suehp Rom has a cool post at his blog. The media in Iran is censored and satellite dishes are officially banned. But a picture reveals it all.

While not covering the entire cityscape, I took a similar picture during my time in Belarus. And while news censorship was pretty bad, the worst was the general programming. One can only take so many bad soap operas... no wonder there were so many dishes.

It looks like a lot of people make do.

La Russophobe says:

Does anyone know what the theoretical penality is for having these things in these places?

Saul says:

I just wish someone would invent a cheap and functional satellite dish that could be flat and mostly transparent. Or just flat and able to function with a coat of paint over it.

An American Iranian journalist just returned from Tehran (I am currently in the US) and told me that the punishment for owning a satellite dish is a pretty high fine, but that there is hardly any enforcement on that. Basically everyone watches Al Jazeera, CNN and BBC. Also Turkish television is pretty popular. And of course, MTV. Internet is being censored, though. Funny thing, you might think the Internet is "the land of the free", but with state control over Internet providers, censorship is actually much easier than in respect to satellite tv.

I believe that! But the interesting thing is that in the past few months, Iran has been one of the top countries that people visit here from. In fact, Iranian search engines send about 30 people a day here (though most of them are looking for "iran sex babe" or something like that).

I think, the media can't be censored for a long time. The liberation will win.
