Alert: City Council Plans Secret Rio Nuevo Board Meeting, May 4!

The Arizona Daily Star reports that the City Council and the Rio Nuevo Multipurpose Facilities District Board have decided to hold a closed-session meeting on May 4 at 3:00 p.m. at City Hall..

During this meeting, it is speculated that they will try to hire Downtown Tucson Partnership Executive Director Glenn Lyons as the new head of Rio Nuevo before the state legislature’s reforms go into effect on July 1. They will also likely be signing a wave of corrupt, no-bid contracts for pet projects.

All behind closed doors!

Despite spending $100 million to no effect, the City Council is obviously keen to keep the public out of the process following the massive turnout for the April 28 Public Budget Hearing.

The Tucson Tea Party encourages as many people as possible to be there to protest the blatant corruption in our local government.

I have sent the following to this mayor.
Mr. Mayor: First let me say I feel you are doing a fine job of running our great city. But I feel, in these desperate times, there are things you should be doing that would make things a whole lot better.
First let me say I am not an educated person, I am just an ole 65 year ole retired carpet cleaner living on my social security and a small military retirement and trying to survive till I die. But I see a lot of waste plus a lot of ways you can make this city better. The big problem is you and the council only listens to those that have money and donate to your reelection coffers. I know that is true because I was once asked how much I donated. But I have always used common sense. So let’s get started.
    1. Why do we have so many reposed homes in Tucson? Why hasn’t the local banks talked to the owners and said ok your in trouble let’s do this. They set down and worked out a total financial arrangement where the owner stays in the house, values stays up, banks getting their money over a longer period of time, it’s a win win. Plus when people live there they use utilities.
    2. Why is Tucson depended on the federal government for so much of its money? I hear on the news where you are in Washington trying to get money. You seemed to have forgotten the federal government works for us, not we work for it. I feel each time we take federal money we are giving up part of our state rights and it must stop. You and the city Council members are here and there spending money. Hey let’s stay home and use that money here. Let’s find ways to do more with less government money. YES there are ways but we have to look for them.
    3. Why are we spending so much money on studies? The down town thing we have spend millions and millions on studies there and we never hear of any return.
    4. Grant Road My friends that money is wasted there are other ways to move that traffic and by the time you get it done the road will be obsolete.
    5. I just think you, City Council, the Business men and women in this city are not doing all that can be done to prevent a lot of the unemployment, business closings, home foreclosures. I feel the three of you can and should be doing a lot more. I ask you all to stop and look at what happen yesterday, the TEA parties. Yes a lot of leaders feel they were put on by a few people that want to cause problems. Sir I disagree with that thought. You know those same people could be marching, recalling you and ever one else in this city government.
    6. Three big questions come to mind as I set and look at what’s happening. 1. Why when things get rough government, leaders, always cut those that can less afford the cuts. 2. Government, leaders, raise fees on those less able to afford to pay them. 3. The past twenty years we have been asked to cut our water usage, we have. Now I understand we are being charged a surcharge because usage is down and the city does not have enough money.
I feel what we, the City of Tucson should be doing and better do is get a copy of the CONSTITUTION and if it does not say the government should provide it the city keeps its hands off. I feel we should had over the past years that were good, the city leaders should had saved ten per cent of the budget each year for times like now.

I am sure if you all stop, look, think, you can come up with a plan to stop all the negative that is going on. I would like to see the evening news stations take just two minutes and give the names of two business that hired someone that day. Do it at the beginning of their news cast or at the end. That would be a step in the right direction. Have them tell of a bank that prevented a foreclosure that day. Lets get them to put out some positive items on our great city, stuff that affects Tucson.

    Thanks Mayor
    Harry Laughman
