The Asia Centre for Human Rights has this overview of the situation in Nepal since yesterday. Here’s its suggestions:
International community must act more decisively and swiftly, NOW, by freezing all assistance including military assistance to Nepal unless His Majesty King Gyanendra:
– Lifts emergency and restores all democratic freedoms and institutions including the immediate release of all those who are detained following the dismissal of the Deuba government, restoration of communication lines, including mobile, internet, long distance calls, and opening of the Kathmandu International Airport and lifting ban on press freedoms;
– Creates a national consensus process involving all the major democratic forces for holding direct talks between the King and the Maoists or between the Prime Minister (to be appointed yet) or any other Minister and the Maoists through third party mediation;
– Takes immediate measures for implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on 13 December 2004;
– Extends the term of the present members of the National Human Rights Commission.The United Nations must also act decisively. The members of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights should hold a Special Session on the situation of human rights in Nepal immediately and send an international investigation team to Nepal report to the forthcoming 61st session.
Why does it always come down to the United Nations? I think India should act here and show that they won’t tolerate aggressive actions toward democracy from the “King.”
UPDATE: The nearby experts in India are predicting that the overthrow won’t last.
“This won’t last three years. The probabilities are that it will be very short-term,” said an Indian political analyst whose areas of expertise include security in Nepal.
…
“He (the king) won’t last three years unless he does some quick backtracking,” said Dr Ajai Sahni, executive director of the Institute for Conflict Management in New Delhi, in a telephone interview.
“As for the three-year timeline he has given for restoring democracy, believe me, people are already planning massive protests that will continue over the next few weeks.”
Geez, what kind of dictator can’t even put down protesters? This guy obviously needs to go to fascist school, which I believe is located as a subdivision of Hamilton College.
