Vitrenko, leader of the PSPU (“progressive socialists”), just announced that they will attempt to impeach Yushchenko by collecting signatures:
According to her, Yushchenko was elected with the serious violations of the law and of European democratic standards, and thus he does not have a moral right to be a President. To speed the things up, her party is using its favourite public method: the collection of signatures. It is not clear whether the signatures collected by Vitrenko????????s party ???????against Yushchenko???????, ???????for Yanukovych???????, ???????for the referendum???????, ???????for Orthodox Christianity and the Union??????? will also be taken into account.
And this is the procedure for impeachment:
Maidan reminds us that the impeachment is a removal of the President from office in case of a serious crime committed by him, such as a state treason. For this the majority in Verkhovna Rada initiates the procedure, the special temporary commission is created for the investigation, its conclusions and proposals are considered by the parliament, and then the constitutional majority agrees or disagrees with the accusation. After that, the respective decision should be made by the Constitutional and Supreme Courts, and only after their approval Verkhovna Rada can agree on the President????????s removal from office by voting for this by a three quarters majority of all parliamentarians.
Yushchenko’s party has 100 of the 450 seats in the Verkhovna Rada. That’s almost the 1/4 needed to block any impeachment attempt anyway. Not that they’ll even get close. To quote the inscrutable Discoshaman on why they may be doing this:
Typically, the Socialists have now refused to join Yushchenko’s Cabinet. They apparently didn’t get the three posts they demanded, and are taking their toys and going home. There are soooo many Russian words that would summarize my opinion of them. English is the world’s greatest language for poetry, but if you drop a hammer on your toe there is no better tongue than Russian.
Crybabies.
