Iraqis fight back against insurgency

One of the more interesting stories I have been reading lately is how a village of Iraqis fought back against insurgents threatening them with violence.

MARK WILLACY: That’s right, Tony. The Iraqi police have investigated a case in the village of al-Mudhariya, which is just south of Baghdad. The villagers there say that before the election insurgents came and warned them that if they voted in last weekend’s election, they would pay.

Now the people of this mixed village of Sunni and Shia Muslims, they ignored the threat and they did turn out to vote.

We understand that last night the insurgents came back to punish the people of al-Mudhariya, but instead of metering out that punishment the villagers fought back and they killed five of the insurgents and wounded eight. They then burnt the insurgents’ car. So the people of that village have certainly had enough of the insurgents.

That’s pretty incredible, I think, and really drives through the Mark Steyn’s labeling Iraq the “home of the brave.” Let’s see what the Iraqi bloggers have to say.

Ali of Free Iraqi had quite a few words of praise:

Well, it doesn’t seem that they needed much protection!
This is such a good news and I never heard anything like it before. I consider it good even if the government forces were not there at the time to do something about it, because it shows that Iraqis are no longer paralyzed by fear from the terrorists and are able to organize themselves and defend their town when it’s necessary. I believe that this is one of the good outcome of the revolution that took place in the great Sunday. Iraqis realized at that day that they’re much stronger than this bunch of psychopaths that are standing in our way to democracy in freedom. I still wish the government work harder on rehabilitating the IP and building the Iraqi army.

There aren’t any others that I can find yet, and I went through all of the Iraq blogs. I’ll update this post later as others may post.
