SYRIA REDEPLOYS TO THE BORDER

Not anything to get worked up over:

BEIRUT, Feb 25 (AFP) – Syria, under intense international pressure to end its tight military and political grip on neighbouring Lebanon, prepared Friday to redeploy its troops toward the border, Lebanese officials said.

That news came as Al-Arabiya television said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan had demanded that Damascus pull its troops out of Lebanon by April or face “measures” from the Security Council. But Annan’s spokesman denied the report, issuing a clarification.

Damascus’ move comes as the Syrian-backed Beirut government was braced for a parliamentary no-confidence vote, which could bring to a head a crisis sparked by last week’s assassination of former premier Rafiq Hariri.

The troops will move into the Bekaa Valley of eastern Lebanon near the border with Syria “within hours,” Lebanese Defense Minister Abdel Rahim Mrad told AFP Thursday afternoon.

Just keep in mind that this is in accordance with the Taef Agreement, not Resolution 1559. They won’t pull out unless they are forced at. For now, just keep your fingers crossed — since that’s all we can do here — and wait for Monday. I’m placing all bets on Monday.

UPDATE: Daniel posts:

It remains to be seen how Boy Assad handles what is becoming an international juggernaut. And I would not be surprised to read several months from now that certain types of prohibited weapons have either been found in the Bakaa Valley or evidence of their existence has been uncovered.

Coincidently, that’s where Syria is redeploying the troops.

ANONYMOUS BUT INTERESTING:

Despite Syria’s announcement today it will withdraw troops from mountain and coastal areas in Lebanon, Damascus has been arming local supporters and preparing troops for possible confrontations, sources in Lebanon told WorldNetDaily.

“They are arming supporters and preparing. Syria is not planning to leave without putting up a fight. Lebanon is too important for ÄSyrian President BasharÅ Assad,” said one source, an opposition figure who asked that his name be withheld.

Many analysts agree Assad considers his influence in Lebanon a key factor to his position in the Middle East and that a successful campaign to drive Syrian troops from Lebanon would devastate the Syrian government.

It doesn’t really elaborate further than that, and the use of an anonymous source makes me think they are just trying to get a good hook for their story. But it is still very likely. And if it proves to be true, then they really think that something will be happening soon. I know I do.
