EGYPTIAN BLOGGER ANTI-TERROR ROUNDUP

This is a roundup for the Egyptian blogosphere (plus some other Arab blogs) and the protests against terrorism which they are organizing. I’ll be updating this post as I get new links.

I would like to note that I was in Luxor, Egypt in December 1997, shortly after the gunning down of foreign tourists at the Temple of Hapsetshut there. It really hurt the local people and they were very angry. There were signs in the streets saying “No to Terrorism” in Arabic only; this wasn’t a campaign for foreign consumption. There was also an Arabic-only interview with Egyptian national TV on the issue which I witnessed and briefly took part in.

Karim Elsahy helps to organize protests in Cairo. A quote: “Stop complaining about others and realize your own apathy. Tomorrow the 24 of July at 5:30pm on the 6 of October bridge between Zamalek and Tahrir. There will be banners available but you are encouraged to bring your own. It should last until sunset. This is not for foreign media. This is to send a message to elements in our own communities. We need to tell these bastards that they are not welcome here.”

Sandmonkey, who unlike Karim is in Egypt now, is also discussing the protest. Be sure to read this post with his perspective on the implications of the bombings.

Big Pharoah says: “This is Egypt you dogs of hell. The Sharm El Sheikh resort is literally the epicenter of the tourism industry. One of Egypt’s most beautiful spots. The terrorists knew where to hit. They knew where it will hurt. Up till now we know that 4 car bombs killed 43 people. The explosions were in different places across the resort. The attacks were very well organized and very sophisticated. We truly entered world war 3. I have been to Sharm countless times. As I was hearing the eyewitness reports, I could feel I was standing right there. The attacks are very serious and deadly to Egypt.”

Chaosgnosis: “The Cancer Within: Egyptians Speak Up!”

The Arabist Network makes a few points regarding the significance of these attacks.

Iraq the Model indicates that Egyptian security sources are saying that this was perpetrated by Pakistanis. If so, I’ll be following up on it as part of my series on the aftermath to the London bombings.

More to come…
