EUROPE TO OFFER IRAN A NON-AGGRESSION PACT

The lessons of history never fail to escape the minds of some. Hitler raged on about his goals in the most overt manner while the rest of Europe believed that one invasion after the other would be enough to appease him. Likewise, the government of Iran, best known for its chants of “Death to America,” is beginning to remove the UN seals on its nuclear reactors while maintaining that the energy will only be used for peaceful purposes. This program has been secret for 18 years, who really believes that? Who really believes now that North Korea’s secret program, even after it signed the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, was only meant for peaceful purposes? Both countries are trying to blackmail and divide the entire free world; that’s their only intent.

But, as always, history is bound to repeat itself. The EU3 is going to offer Iran a host of security and economic incentives, essentially a payoff, even though it is common sense to assume that the regime will continue with its program. The plan would include a non-aggression pact, as pathetic as that sounds.

With talks at a sensitive stage, diplomats described the details only on the condition of anonymity.

They said efforts are underway to assure Iran and others that the deal would be forthcoming. The dispute over timing appears to have resulted from crossed communication. The Europeans expected Iranian president-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad would want to take office and get his team in place before tackling the new package. He is to be sworn in later this week. But Iran’s outgoing leadership may want to be remembered for receiving the deal.

Iran’s state-run news service quoted Hassan Rowhani, the country’s top nuclear negotiator, as saying the deal was expected to include “guarantees about Iran’s integrity, independence ÄandÅ national sovereignty” as part of a nonaggression pact. Rowhani reportedly shared the details in a letter to outgoing President Mohammad Khatami, the news service reported, according to the Associated Press in Tehran.

Diplomats close to the talks said the European offer would recognize Iran’s right to a civilian nuclear energy program that is “safe, economically viable and proliferation proof.”

The package also includes guaranteed and sustainable access to fuel, so that Iran would not need to enrich its own uranium, and lays out a strategy for economic relations in energy, trade and investment.

I guess it’s only fitting that France is in on this.
