THOUSANDS PROTEST FOR NEPAL DEMOCRACY

Over 3,000 people staged a sit-in protest in Kathmandu demanding an end to the monarchy and the restoration of parliamentary democracy. My blogosphere buddy Jim Hoft has a roundup.

The protesters on Tuesday squatted in the street at Basantapur Durbar Square for several hours and disrupted traffic.

Demonstrators included members of the Peace Society of Nepal, supporters of the country’s seven main parties, artists and writers.

The protest was called by a group called the Citizen’s Movement for Democracy and Peace, said one of the organisers, Mathura Shrestha.

Women activists carried lit lanterns to symbolise their search for freedom and justice, Shrestha said.

The protestors carried placards reading “Monarchy no, Democracy yes” as well as banners denouncing the king’s seizure of power in the Himalayan kingdom.

Paramendra Bhagat also has a ton of photos from protests posted today.

I wrote about Nepal just a week ago regarding the destruction of civil liberties and how the King has been ineffective at combating the Maoist insurgency. It would be rather repetitive to go into it for a second time, so make sure you read that analysis here.
