IRAQ CONSTITUTION DELAYED THREE DAYS

If you’re sick and deranged like me, you’ve been refreshing Iraq the Model every five minutes to see the latest updates on the National Assembly meeting. It looks as if they have delayed the vote on the draft itself for three more days so that the parliamentarians will have time to read it over, discuss amongst themselves, and make grandstanding statements to the press.

That said, the Shiites and the Kurds have gone ahead and worked out their differences in the constitution, including oil distribution, federalism, and the role of Islam in making laws. The latter being the most disheartening of developments.

I won’t be analyzing this exact moment because there isn’t much to analyze. Nothing much has changed since last week. The big kicker will be if the National Assembly approves the draft, if it decides to vote for another extension, or if it can’t agree on either and is forced to dissolve, thus triggering new elections and starting the process over. Therefore, over the next three days, I’ll be working on a comprehensive post covering all angles.

UPDATE: Screw it. I’m still going to do a comprehensive post in three days, but there’s something lingering on my mind about this whole thing and how it needs to be fixed, so I’m going to do a post about it tomorrow. Until then, use the comments section to discuss.
