The tyrannical government of Maldives is charging opposition MDP Chairman Mohamed Nasheed on counts of terrorism after he was detained last Friday.
TVM and Voice of Maldives, the state-run media in Maldives, has announced that the Chairperson of Maldivian Democratic Party, Mohamed Nasheed (Anni), is to be charged for terrorism.
State run media said Nasheed is to be charged under the terrorism act????????s article 6 (b) with reference to 2 (g)
Article 2(g) states, ???????any act or the attempt to commit an act that may instill fear among the people or threaten life, person or property of any person verbally or in writing.???????
According to the announcement on state media, Nasheed incited hatred against the state, in his speeches on his many trips around the atolls as the chairperson of the MDP. The state claims that Nasheed told untruths to defame the state and the President, which caused anger amongst the public.
In addition to these charges, the state are in the process of building a case against Nasheed for the unlawful acts that he allegedly committed on 12 August at Republic Square and at the MDP????????s main assembly hall (G. Dhunfinihiyaa/Haruge)
According to the terrorism act of the Maldives, any person charged for committing an act of terrorism can be punishable ???????with imprisonment or banishment for a term no less than ten years but not exceeding fifteen years.???????
If you’ll remember correctly from the previous posts, all that Nasheed did was sit in the middle of Republican Square in protest of the government crackdown on pro-democracy rallies one year prior. There is no refuting this, as the entire event and the unwarranted arrest were captured on video. According to the Maldives government, this is an act of terrorism:
Hundreds of people are still detained after the rallies, and the government won’t say who or for how long. They’re just saying that they will be taking “very severe steps” against them, which, judging by some photos at Minivan News, includes torture.
Still no word from Amnesty International.
