As we have noted in previous roundups, Evo Morales is not the worst Marxist lunatic in the Bolivian political line-up. That honor may belong to Felipe Quispe. He is a far-leftist and indigenous-“rights” romantic who openly advocates violence and who has no chance of winning the December presidential election. So, with diminishing prospects, he says he will take up arms if he loses.
Boli-Nica believes that Quispe may be acting in collusion with Evo Morales. If Quispe can make himself look like people’s worst nightmare – a crazed leftist intent on confiscating everything they own, he will indirectly make the far-left Chavez-Castro acolyte, Morales, look statesmanlike in comparision. That could put Morales over the top in the December vote. Morales currently leads the polls.
Boli-Nica’s analysis is here.
UPDATE: Eduardo Avila has interesting commentary below:
One has to admit that Quispe and the people in the Altiplano have a legitimate gripe because the benefits of the current economic model have not trickled down to significantly change their lives for the better. Anyone who visits these remote areas would know exactly what I mean. But clearly the way is through the current, yet flawed democratic process that Morales is going through (although his on-and-off support of blockades and other threats bother me the most).
I also suspect his comments are based out of frustration and a bit of envy that Evo is close to becoming Bolivia????????s next President and that Quispe has been made politically irrevelant.
