Colombia’s constituional Supreme Court has ruled that Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe can run for re-election as president again!

Earlier on, Colombia’s Congress had voted to change the constitution to allow Uribe to run for a second term, and now the Court has given the green light. There’s one more ruling awaited in November, but, like that first CAFTA victory we won in the Senate, this is a great first step and fantastic news! President Uribe currently has an 80% popularity rating among Colombia’s voters and is likely to win reelection, ensuring a continuation of his policies.

There is no finer leader anywhere in the hemisphere who can make a bigger difference than President Uribe. He’s destroying terrorism, installing free markets, and creating a new nation out of one of the world’s worst hellholes on a scale unseen almost anywhere else in the world. Colombia’s stock market has gone up 500% since he’s taken office. The debt has been repaid early, the peso is soaring, the jobless rate is tumbling, investment both foreign and domestic has gone through the moon and confidence and optimism is returning. Crime has evaporated. Colombia reported exactly two kidnaps this year. The Lonely Planet bulletin boards are full of tourists raving about how wonderful this country really is. There ARE no bad economic indicators coming out of Colombia, it’s all an amazing story of believing in freedom, markets and people.

The entire continent has never seen the likes of a leader like this – and I am thinking way back into history. This humble, self-effacing, beautifully-lettered South American leader is not a failure like most of them but a great, Lincolnesque, Reaganesque success!

As a revolutionary, President Uribe merits a capital R.
