Hardcore leftwing ‘activists’ aligned with Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez, Cuban despot Fidel Castro and Bolivian coca-growing champion Evo Morales have served legal papers charging genocide to Bolivia’s finest former president, the elderly Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada, a superb democratic revolutionary leader who in the early 1990s slew South America’s highest-ever inflation rate, began Bolivia’s natural gas expansion and set his country on the road to first-world prosperity – until he was detestably ousted from power by communistic road-blockers acting as a gang of thugs.
He was the first Bolivian I had ever met. I talked with him and wrote about him some ten years ago. He was marvellous, a real free marketer who had faith in his country and the power of the people. Before I met him, I had thought Bolivia was a storybook tale of poverty and misery. After meeting him – and he had such a sunny personality! – I thought Bolivia was a place of hope with great prospects for human advancement. This president so cared about his Bolivia! I wanted to keep watching this country I had previously had no interest in because its charming president told such a compelling story and was such an obvious believer. Naturally, with that kind of faith, President Gonzalez de Lozada was hated by the left elite because of his steady belief in the individual initiative of people over the ministrations of governments.
Well, now with papers served, these wretched cockroach-like meddling foreign Sandalistas – so out of his league – now have what they want, a full distortion of the word ‘genocide’ ahead of a politically motivated trial. I am furious at this farce. The U.S. darn well better grant this fine ally of democratic revolution the asylum he deserves.
Eduardo Avila was an eyewitness to the whole thing in Princeton, NJ, and wrote about the historic encounter very well right here.
