AZERI OPPOSITION BEGINS ATTEMPTED REVOLUTION

A crowd of over 15,000 demonstrators gathered in Baku’s Victory Square to protest Sunday’s fraudulent elections. The protests had been sanctioned by the government for today, but it is unlikely that further protests will be officially allowed. Opposition leaders have vowed to continue taking to the streets through the weekend, and if history is any indication, riot police will try to quell any unsanctioned protests. The good news is that several groups outside of the main opposition alliance have joined in, which means that the number can only grow from here.

The oppositional block “Azadliq” along with “Yeni Siyaset” ÄNew PoliticsÅ block and the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan have started their promised rally at the “20 January” subway station and are moving towards “Gelebe” movie theater were they will hold a meeting that was sanctioned by the city authorities.

The majority of the opposition banners are in English, calling the US President G.W.Bush to give democracy to Azeri people. Opposition is shouting: “Resignation”.

First deputy of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, Sardar Jalalogly called voters “to fight till the end and not let the falsification to pass”

Entrances to the Galaba square are blocked by ordinary police patrol cars. The situation is calm.

People on the square in front of the subway station are carrying orange and red flags. The red flags with word “Liberal” written on them belong to the Liberal Party of Azerbaijan. Some oppositionists are wearing orange ties others have small flags on their cloth.

The opposition demonstrates against alleged falsifications committed during the elections. The rally is taking the same route used by Yeni Azerbaijan Party during its last pre-election meeting. At the same place ruling YAP is planning to rally again tomorrow.

The head of rally committee of “Azadliq” block Hasan Kerimov said that the rally may turn into timeless action unless authorities will fail to react on it.

Bolstered by allegations of fraud from the OSCE, the EU, and the United States, Radio Free Europe related that this is one of the biggest rallies held to date and that these factors are making the opposition feel really confident at the moment. It looks like they will try to take to the streets everyday, but if they aren’t able to, then they will organize another large rally on November 12.

But we still don’t have a name for this revolution, if it indeed goes down. I’ve heard suggestions for “necktie revolution” due to the orange neckties that many protestors are wearing. Anyone?
