TWO ITALIAN NEWSPAPERS RE-PRINT MOHAMMAD CARTOONS

Two more Italian newspapers reprinted the Mohammed cartoons. L’Opinione and Libero are two center-right-leaning newspapers that consider themselves as “libertarian” and “unpolitically correct”.

Here is L’Opinione frontpage today.

And below is Libero’s . For those who don’t read Italian, this is the translation of the title: “Here Mohammed gives orders-What a shame. Europe caves in to Islam and apologizes for satire about Allah – Here are the 12 satanic cartoons nobody dares to publish”

I believe that it’s everone’s right to criticize the cartoons. Everyone can agree or disagree about the content of the cartoons, but I think that every open-minded person agrees that free speech cannot be condemned by death fatwas, massive boycotts, etc.

Not being religious, I’d not get offended by satire making fun of Jesus Christ or Mary. At the same time, I’d like to see the birth of a movement of arab and muslim secular activists who rise up against religious obscurantism. The Western world fought hard to get rid of the power of the Church, however brutal the ways to do so were been.

Today, Muslim fanatics are protesting satiric cartoons. Yesterday they violented protested and issued fatwas against Salman Rushdie, Naguib Mahfouz, Taha Yassin and today against Arab secularists like Lafif Lakhdar.

Islam needs to be reformed and made it open to criticism if the Islamic world is to get out of the Dark Ages it is living in. Furthermore, the Islamic world’s societies should adopt secularism, that means total separation of state and religion.

Thanks God there’s a growing network of open-minded and secular arabs and muslims who are asking to boycott the boycott and buy Danish products. Not that all of them think that those cartoons were nice. Some think they’re not. Yet, all agree on the fact that free speech is sacred and religious obscurantism must be defeated.

Below is a list of some Muslim bloggers who are braving fundamentalists by encouraging to boycott the boycott.

Moroccoan Or Does it Explodes ; Bahraini Chan’ad Bahraini; Egyptian Big Pharaoh; Saudi blogger Muttawa says that fundamentalist muslims offense level is now “Orange”, meaning “Highly Offended” .

I’ve an idea to submitt to our arab readers who run the above-mentioned blogs: WRITE A LETTER TO JYLLANDS-POSTEN AND LET THEM KNOW THAT THERE’RE ARABS WHO DON’T SUPPORT THE INSANITY OF MANY OF THEIR COUNTRYMEN. TRY TO GET AS MANY OPEN-MINDED ARABS AS POSSIBLE WHO WISH TO SIGN THE LETTER!

And here is a petition you can sign to support free speech.

UPDATE: Italy’s Il Corriere della Sera reprinted the Mohammed cartoons, as well. Today, Magdi Allam – the brave Egyptian-born Italian investigative journalist and vice-editor for Il Corriere – said that the Free world must not apologize . “If it does, it sends a wrong message to those who hate life, who would think that the free world is ready to give up the right to free speech and, along with it, the values of life and liberty”
