More babes, significant because they are in a group, lone babes do not make a revolution

I am rooting for Argentina in this World Cup match, same as last time, and this year, they are dazzling us all. Although I thought the Argentina-Ivory Coast game was a textbook example of precision, teamwork, economy of motion and energy, the Argentine futbol victory over Serbia was very sweet because I remember a few years ago, at some basketball championship, the Serbs stole victory from Argentina by cheating. This was a nice payback, and the Argentines showed no mercy.

But one thing has genuinely puzzled me – why no babes? The football team was certainly made up of guy babes, but there were very very few female babes, no matter where the photos were taken. I checked out Flickr collections, FIFA, Yahoo, Google, nada!

The soccer fans of Argentina all seemed to be rough, proletarian-looking men. What’s worse, plenty of them seemed to have a taste for dressing like clowns. Hardly a babes-of-politics phenomenon, for sure, and very interesting because Argentina was doing so brilliantly.

Soccer of course is a proletarian thing in Argentina, its good players often come from very dispossessed backgrounds, the homely, unprepossessing Diego Maradona is a good example, he was raised in a shantytown. Its teams attract a lot of soccer hooligans at home, which is sure to drive babes away, too. Is that why babes were in such short supply in Argentina?

Maybe the muted tone of politics is a sign of normalcy. I remember how politically charged things were in 2002 – Argentina was enmired in an incredible economic collapse, like none they had ever seen – and I think the young Argentine team buckled under the pressure. Now things are getting a little more normal (for now) and politics is not so salient a feature of the political landscape there, although in my opinion, it’s a false lull.

But it seems to mean very few babes. In a land famous for its babes, they are in remarkably short supply as Argentina’s team runs away with victory. Keep posted though, maybe they will turn out when Argentina wins the Cup!
