In a wonderful surprise, Sweden’s center-right bloc has defeated the long-ruling socialist coalition, in Sunday’s parliamentary election, 48%-46.2%. A new government is being formed now. The winners are a four-party bloc who’ve been out of power for 25 years. They have just ousted the ruling 3-party socialist coalition which has held power in its current lineup for a decade. Meanwhile, taking in just 35% of the vote, the socialist party itself had its worst showing since 1914!

The center-right, led by 41-year-old Fredrik Reinfeldt of the centrist party, vows to reform Sweden’s out-of-control welfare system which is doing so much to contribute to crime and ennui in the otherwise pristine country, focusing on putting welfare recipients into jobs, rather than just yanking their benefits.

The winning bloc, not surprisingly, got huge support from Sweden’s young people, who, unlike their French counterparts, notice that 15% unemployment usually means no jobs at all for them, never mind what the benefits are like if one get hired. The young Swedes want to put ther energies to work in their home countries instead of having to flee to Los Angeles for those, as so many young Swedes have had to do.

As you may imagine, Sweden’s stock market went hog-wild, creating tons of wealth for lots of people across the board. Markets are forward looking and they see something they like in this victory that could unleash the energies of Sweden’s intelligent and itching to work young people.

It’s a great victory for markets and progress in a peaceful country that’s been socialist for way too long.
