Hugo Chavez addresses the United Nations General Assembly
Source: Reuters, via Yahoo! News
If Hugo Chavez had wanted to repel the American public, he could not have done a better job than this morning, speaking before the United Nations. Waving a Noam Chomsky book like a late-night K-Tel salesman, he found time to hawk Chomsky tomes, which I am sure was effective – given that people will want to know exactly what he filled his head with after a rant like that.
Next, the oily encyclopedia salesman began raving that George Bush was the devil. He yelled about the smell of sulphur and aped signs of the cross, in a perfect blasphemy of the religion of Pope Benedict, repeating the devil talk in about ten forms, over and over. Endearing.

He’s not done selling, yet. Chavez addresses the U.N. some more

The supposed head of state (is he really a head of state? Are we sure he’s not a late-night parody comedian?) ranted on about how the U.S. thinks it owns the world, and made another sales pitch about representing the third world at the United Nations. Yeah, after that performance I bet a lot of third-world countries would like him as their representative.
Then he started yelling about the Iraq War, ranting on about how the streets of San Diego – San Diego – people were supposedly against the war. Scuse me, Hugo, the U.S. Navy has a presence in that city, and trust me, that city’s residents are willing to support their president. I am amazed he had ever heard of San Diego, actually.

Dignity? That’s something for other people’s presidents

Then he ranted some more about the United Nations, saying he’d like to move the headquarters of it to the ‘global south.’ He said Caracas would be just perfect, and in the minds of many Americans, the stopped watch had finally reached its accuracy point before time moved on elsewhere. It was an amazing display of lunacy. He made an incredible fool of himself. And now Americans got to see him up close just in case they hadn’t been watching earlier.
The one good thing about this speech, other than the demand to get the U.N. out of New York, is that Hugo Chavez has raised Americans’ appreciation for what Venezuelans have to go through, every day, living with this buffoon, wrecking their country. You can just see it in that speech.

Gabo at El Gabo Gringo has made an amazing discovery. As Chavez was futzing around, shouting and bellowing, all smoke and sulphur, the little UN lady above him in the photo was laughing her head off at him. He got some close ups of her giggling and the effect is unmistakeable. The whole photo sequence is a must-see here!
