Protesting Hugo Chavez in Washington on Friday

Today, hundreds of angry Brazilians, angry Bolivians, angry Chileans, angry Cubans, angry Ecuadoreans, angry Mexicans, angry Nicaraguans, angry Peruvians, angry Salvadorans, angry Colombians, angry Argentines and others gathered at the Organization of American States to protest the international political meddling of Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez against their countries. Chavez seems to think he has a sayso in the affairs of every single country in the region. Turnout for the short notice rally was very good. Here is the original flyer and I’m gonna get photos…

El Universal has the first story here:

Latinos reject Ch????vez’ “interference”

Brazilians, Bolivians, Colombians, Cubans, Chileans, Ecuadorians, Mexicans, Nicaraguans, Peruvians, Salvadorans, and Venezuelans living in the United States are to protest against “the interventionism of President Hugo Ch????vez and his aggressions against national institutions.”

Robert Carmona-Borjas, president of Centro Arcadia, said the march against Ch????vez’ “interference” in the affairs of Latin American nations would take place Friday outside the headquarters of the Organization of American States. “We are going to demonstrate outside this regional body that is becoming increasingly inefficient and ask for the enforcement of the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”

He added that “the crisis Venezuela is unleashing is contaminating the whole region. The role of the (OAS) Secretary General has to be redefined. The governments have to take on their responsibility to foster democracy and values, without subterfuges or interests,” the group said in a press release.

“Ch????vez’ imperialist aspirations are mirrored by his policy to expand his autocratic, neo-communist project, which is threatening Latin American stability and has destroyed both the economy and the democratic institutions in Venezuela,” said Gustavo Coronel, a spokesman of the International Venezuelan Council for Democracy (IVCD).

UPDATE: This essay, by Gustavo Coronel, who was at the rally, is absolutely brilliant.
