COLOMBIA NEWS ROUNDUP

It’s one or two days since my FARC news roundup and today I’ve noticed all the non-FARC Colombia news.

Google Colombia, skip the FARC pieces, and notice what news is left. Notice how marvellous Colombia’s government is, what fine things it’s done to make Colombia the great wealthy country it’s meant to be, and take a look at the string the visionary measures Colombia’s taken to secure its long-term future. This is the quietest, most peaceful revolution in the world. And it is a real revolution – a great sudden change from 40 years of narcoterrorist warfare and institutional weakness. All that remains of Colombia is a gem-like strength and a luminous glow. How many nations do you know that are like this? How many people in the U.S. think of Colombia as anything but an unliveable hellhole? The reality is ….

Colombia’s a shimmering emerald of a nation, buried beneath FARC mud, and now coming to light.

Here’s a news roundup from Colombia with just one day’s worth of news:

Colombia, never the deadbeat, (and that’s a rarity in its geographic neighborhood) paid back early $700 million in debt, clearing it from its books and setting a platform for lower interest rates and long-term growth, something that will benefit everyone in Colombia. Markets cheered, with major indexes rising sharply higher.

Colombia sends 30 experienced flood workers to aid rescues in the U.S. along the Gulf Coast, bringing with them ten tons of high-protein food packets for emergency situations. The workers have years of knowledge about flood rescues in Colombia and will invariably contribute something very valuable to the U.S. disaster relief.

A tourist goes to Colombia and finds, contrary to its image, that it’s a truly marvellous, enchanting country, with a vibrant cultural scene. This ran in a smaller press (Buffalo, New York), a place whose residents are unlikely to think very much about visiting Colombia. That may change.

Colombia drilling away on its oil reserves, and a small drilling company put out a press release describing its new ventures in developing the untapped oil resources there and finds it promising.

Rock star Shakira, who is from Barranquilla, Colombia, has built a new school with some of her rock millions. She is doing it to aid the poor.

Spain’s Telefonica wants to invest more money in Colombia and is actively seeking opportunities.

Take away the FARC and this is the kind of news you get from Colombia, one of our most faithful, and inspiring allies in the world. Let’s wish them all the best, this is exactly the kind of press coverage they deserve and my only hope is that it becomes more widely known.

iViva Colombia!
